I thought I would share some of the other creatures we share our house with. This is my sweet sweet Milo. This is one of my favourite pictures of him as he is looking up towards Ty. Milo and I have been together for almost 7 years. We have been through so much together and he's been a trooper through it all. He is such a sweet heart, so kind, so loving and so innocent. Well, to me at least, he is quite shy and skiddish of anyone else that steps foot in this house except his beloved GG and sometimes his dad.
I picked up Milo almost 7 years ago on the side of a road by a box that said free kittens. I drove up to the house that had the free kittens and was asking the farmer about him, he couldn't tell me much as they were just "barn" cats but he did mention that all Milo's brothers and sisters were adopted about 6 weeks before I found him. A few people had stopped to see Milo but none took him, I just know he was waiting for me! When I picked him up he was covered in fleas, extremely bloated, cross eyed and of course, his signature curly tail. I stopped at the local grocery store to pick up the necessary supplies and to get some flea medicine. At the time I was living with a boyfriend and we had a dog. Thankfully Milo wasn't too afraid of the dog, he was more petrified by the flea bath I gave him. He must have been exhausted because he slept laying in my arms that evening (which he has yet to do since) It is there that our story began.
Milo was anything but a "free" kitten (they never really are) thankfully my boyfriend at the time worked for a vet clinic so I got some discounts, but even then, in addition to his regualr shots, de-worming and neutering he had to be front declawed due to the fact his nails were ingrown and causing him pain. The first few months were also spent understanding some of his behaviors. He started to pee on the bed, took him in and it was discovered he had a uti. He now suffers from chronic uti's but over the 7 years I have adapted to reduce the amount by making sure his litter box is cleaned every day (he pees on the bed whens its too dirty as well) and catering to his request of turning the bath tub faucet on. He will NOT drink water from a bowl, it has to be moving. We tried one of the fountain things but it was getting dirt to easily so now he comes to us and meows and then will run into the tub when he wants his water.
It was also discovered that Milo has sever allergies (more reasons he was not "free") at first I tried to reduce environmental allergies which didn't work so then we tried different foods and slowly realized he has a severe reaction to certain foods. He was on a special blend until I moved to Canada and we switched due to the old brand not being sold here. I found a great food that he loves (until the last two days) that has no corn, soy or wheat and is natural so it doesn't upset his stomach. Unfortunately, his tummy is so sensitive now that he can't have treats other than cat nip and the occasional tuna water. Of course, switching his food was not the only way we solved his allergies. For a year he went in every month to get allergy shots, which when we moved back here I couldn't afford but they mentioned to me that it shouldn't have been administered every month due to side effects. I'm happy to say we have kept his allergies under control (well until recently) and he has only had two shots in the last 4 years :0)
Because he does have severe allergies he also suffers from asthma (I didn't know a cat could get that either). His coughing fits stay under control as long as his allergies are okay but there is the occasional time he does require a shot to help him breathe.
Another interesting thing about Milo is his curly tail. The guy at the farm couldn't explain it but a vet did an xray and discovered that it appears Milo was stepped on as a kitten and because he was a farm cat no one did anything about it and his whole back end is now set weird. In addition to his curly tail, his legs bow out and he has a very hard time jumping. He does have arthritis in his back hip and knee joints but it seems as of right now it is not causing him pain, we have not had to take the pain med route yet.
Milo is my severely special needs cat but I love him. He has such a heart of gold and a list of nicknames : Millie, Mildew, Mooie, Moo Sho Pork Potty Pan, Miller, Moo, Moodaroo, Mil, Mooder, Cow cat, Moo Man, Moodoo Moods....the list goes on and on. Milo was definietly not a "free" cat, in fact I have spent thousands on him (he was sick a year after we moved here and it was NOT cheap, but he needed fluids and shots to help him keep things down and he just got his teeth cleaned) but every cent I have spent on him has been worth it. He is my main squeeze, my first true love, we have been through hell and back together and he continues to be a mamas boy. I would be lost without him. He has such an innocence to him and those he lets get close agree he has such a sweet composure.
7 years ago when I got him I had no idea I would be where I am today and I wasn't even sure with all his medical problems if he'd make it this far. We had our fair share of trials and tribulations but we are now at a point where everything is under control for the mean time. It's crazy to look back and think of all we have been through, the lonely points where he was my everything, all the different people and pets we have lived with, all the different foods he was on, all the different vets we had to see, it's been a lot and yet here he is, still standing (well currently napping) by my side through it all.
I know Milo knows I love him but I wanted to share him with the world! I'll see if I can scan some pictures from when he was a kitten, his cross eyed, bloated little body was SO cute!
Just my beautiful sweet Milo
You can see his curly tail here, he's just hanging by one of his favourite places.
